The 2002 CalPERS Long-Term Care Plans application period will begin on April 1, 2002, and end on June 30, 2002. All public employees (including non-CalPERS members), retirees, their spouses, parents, parents-in-law, and new this year siblings (age 18 and over) will have the opportunity to apply for coverage.

Applicants may choose from a broad array of benefits options in each of the three CalPERS Long-Term Care Plans. Premiums are age-related so the younger you are when you apply, the less a plan costs.

The average cost of one year in a nursing home today is $47,000. By 2019, one year of nursing home care is expected to cost $119,000. Typically, neither health insurance nor Medicare covers long-term care. Long-term care coverage is one good way to deal with the high cost of care.

For an application kit, please call 1-800-338-2244 or visit the CalPERS website.
