The UAW and the University are now embarking on the collective bargain process that will result in a labor agreement covering postdoctoral scholar terms and conditions of employment.
This collective bargaining process formally began Monday, January 12th when the UAW and UC exchanged preliminary bargaining proposals. These proposals are available online here.
Active negotiations are scheduled to begin on February 5 & 6, 2009. During this first session, each party will explain the reasons for each of its proposals. The UAW and UC will also discuss ground rules for negotiations, and will establish a schedule for the first few months of negotiations.
While both the University and the UAW are committed to concluding negotiations as quickly as possible, the timeline for negotiations is unknown. While it is possible that the parties can achieve agreement in a couple months, some initial contracts have taken up to two years to complete.
The University maintains this website as a resource for postdoctoral scholars and others interested in learning more about the unit and the collective bargaining process.
