If you continue working at UC past age 65, you are not required to sign up for Medicare Part B since federal law stipulates that your UC group health plan will be your primary coverage. When you retire or should you lose your employer medical coverage, you must immediately enroll in Medicare Part B. Medicare may charge a permanent 10% penalty for each full year you could have had Part B and didn t. For more information, see the Medicare Factsheet [PDF] and/or contact Social Security at 800-772-1213.

If you are currently enrolled in Medicare and accept UC employment and enrollment into a group health plan, you should continue your Part B enrollment. Once you have enrolled in Part B, you must remain in Part B to avoid paying a penalty to Medicare.

When you obtain services through your doctor and/or any hospital, show your UC group health plan ID card as well as your Medicare card and state that you are currently employed. Not showing your UC group health plan card will create a delay in proper claims payment as Medicare will be secondary coverage while you are employed.
